Living by Purpose Leads to Total Engagement

To begin with, I should recap my Purpose Statement affirmed in the class. It is "To serve people hoping that they will benefit from my life, to exalt the underlying values of human beings and eventually bring about peace and righteousness to the world."

The recent toxic milk food manufactured in China confirms my belief that the underlying values of human beings must be upheld. One shouldn't exploit others for reason of money making or economic growth. To live according to the Purpose Statement, I have immediately put in hand the following actions:

1. I have impressed upon my colleagues that when we specify the form and finishes of residential flats and commercial premises in our contracts to be implemented by our joint venture developers, we must ensure that not only all the essential parameters in terms of structural stability and technical qualities are included, we should also embody the most advanced and practical environmental provisions in order that our products will be environmentally friendly and sustainable for the whole life of the products. These may mean additional costs, but if what we do satisfies our own conscience, we shall live happier and uphold the values of human beings.

2. I have been writing down three things each day that I feel happy about. Although I can't do it every day nor can I always think of three happy events a day, I nevertheless keep a record of what I feel happy about almost every day. Gradually, I feel much less tense and more relaxed, which in turn gives me more energy to cope with more work. Positive thinking and a smiling face is really a lubricant for securing interpersonal relationships. I think I am happier than before and my energy level is a lot higher albeit I still have to work long hours every day.

3. High quality connections. This has helped me communicate with my boss. Funny enough, I have got the courage to say what I wanted to say in a subtle way including those matters which may be contrary to his belief and directions. In the end, in a recent performance appraisal, I got the highest rating which means more bonus to me. I am glad that I am able to bring what I learnt in class to my workplace.

4. I have decided to devote more time to church because it fulfils part of my Purpose Statement in that my service there will benefit people both mentally and physically. By studying God's words, I will be able to learn gradually how to be a man of peace and righteousness. There are numerous less privileged people needing our help, and to serve them means bringing greater value to my life. It makes me happier.

LIFT Consulting wants to reinforce that we are not here to tell you what your values and purpose need to be but rather ask people if they know their values and purpose and whether or not they live by them in their work. If not than it is hard to be fully engaged in your job and even harder to be a leader.
