Changing My Personal Life Improved the BusinessI love my job and the people I get to work with on a day to day basis. My problem is I care so much I am always volunteering to help everyone and I never take care of my own needs. I often feel like I’m low on energy and that I’m going to burn out. I get very involved with the details of all of the work being done in my team. I do so because I want everyone to do a good job and because I care so much. The problem is I go in early to work and get home late every day. Many things I need to do at home just don’t get done. While attending Leading for Total Engagement I had a chance to step back and evaluate my life. I clarified who I am and what I want to accomplish. I began to see many things about myself that I could change in my life and the course helped me decide I was going to do something about it.
That first weekend after the course I started to work on my personal commitments and started a number of projects. I repainted my house and redecorated. I started working out and eating well and lost weight. I started to do other things that I wanted to do and took the time to do so. I took control of my personal life again. Because I started all of these projects at home I couldn’t stay at work as long. I couldn’t be involved in as many details of the projects my team is working on. I had to let go of control at work and decide what things were most important for me to be doing to support my time in the hours I was willing to allot to work (which still is a quite a lot of hours). My people have stepped up and are doing an outstanding job. The performance of the team is improving and I’m happy not only at work but in my personal life. Taking these steps was a scary proposition and sometimes I still get overwhelmed but as I continue my journey down this path I have found that I’m having great success in all aspects of my life. |
