Teaching Positive Leadership in China

Monday, November 28th, 2011

– BY SCHON BEECHLER

6:19 AM. I am sitting in my hotel room in Shanghai, still a bit jetlagged and waiting for the sun to rise through the haze of the city. I’m here to teach executive courses on positive leadership with two colleagues from Melbourne and we’ve already delivered two programs and are getting ready to start our third this morning. The stresses on the executives attending our courses are enormous – everything here is changing at lightning speed, competition is fierce, work weeks are grueling. And, at the same time, there are fantastic opportunities for each and every one of them. They are just hard to see beyond the mania of the day to day. That’s what we’re doing here. (more…)

The Collapse of the Red Sox and My Choice to Live Differently: A Program to Change How You React to Negative Events

Friday, September 30th, 2011

By Robert E. Quinn

I was born in 1946.  I suspect I became a Red Sox fan in 1945.  I am sure it was sometime shortly after the day of conception.  What this means is that I have lived through every tragedy in the modern history of this unique franchise.   When Dent hit the homerun, when the ball rolled through Buckner’s legs, when Aaron Boone pulled one over the fence, I was devastated.  Each time it took months to recover.  Last night, when the Red Sox fell from ahead to lose and the Rays came from behind to win all in a three-minute period, it seemed to eclipse all of the previous disasters.  It was so improbable.

Even so, here is the big news.

I feel great.

I still love the Red Sox. But the negative events that often surround the team no longer determine how I feel. (more…)

Battling the Barrage of Bad

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

– BY SCHON BEECHLER

In my blogs this week I am going to tackle the topic of negativity and positivity in our lives. Today, I characterize what I see as a major problem in our lives, and in tomorrow’s blog I offer up 10 simple ideas how to bring some positivity back into our day to day existence.

I have circled the globe in the past 14 days. Economies are on the precipice of chaos, countries are teetering on the brink of war, and political uncertainty and turmoil roil across all the continents as unemployment edges up higher and higher, patience wanes, and tempers run hot.  In one poignant indicator of the state of the world, here are the titles of all the top stories on the front page of the New York Times this morning: “As Scorn for Vote Grows, Protests Surge Around Globe,” “Christians Fear Future in Syria Beyond Assad,” “Health Insurers Push Premiums Sharply Higher,” Rights Collide as Town Clerk Sidesteps Role in Gay Marriages,” and “Even Those Cleared of Crimes Can Stay on FBI’s Watch List.”

Scorn, Contempt, Protests, Fear, Upheaval, New York Battle Looms, Terrorist Watch List – these are the stories, the words, the sentiments that slap me in the face as I start my day. What are we doing to ourselves?  (more…)

Positively Managing Performance: The Performance Management Interview

– By Schon Beechler

My blogs this week on Tuesday and Wednesday have focused on overcoming fear and helping employees understand that they are making progress in meaningful work.  Today, I continue with this theme and provide a short summary of a very useful and practical tool that positive leaders can use in order to help employees track their progress, connect them to meaningful work, and improve their performance. Making Progress, Finding Meaning, and Employee Performance

Professor Teresa Amabile and Stephen Kramer have just published a book, The Progress Principle, summarizing the results of a large-scale study of employee performance. Amabile and Kramer, who analyzed more than 12,000 daily diaries of employees, found that individuals with more positive inner worklives – which includes perceptions, emotions, and motivations – perform better.  And what creates a positive inner worklife? Analyzing a large number of possible factors, the authors discovered that the feeling that employees were making progress on work they found meaningful had the largest impact. (more…)

Positive Leaders’ Courage Helps Us Overcome Our Own Fears

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I spent part of last week in Montreal with a remarkable group of not-for-profit leaders from all over the world. One of the themes that flowed through the week was the role of creating and sustaining relationships and the importance of trust. I’ve talked about trust many times in sessions I teach on leadership and motivation but last week, listening to the experiences and wisdom of this group of leaders, I had something of an epiphany: Being able to trust our leaders is so important to us because somewhere, deep down inside, all of us are at least a little bit afraid. Positive Leadership: Standing Up When Your Ego Tells You To Sit Down

On Friday and Saturday I posted two blogs regarding my recent failed teaching experience in India last week. I shared this story for two primary reasons. First, I shared my story to solicit input from others that I can use to help me understand what went wrong this time so that I can use it in the future.  I plan to return to India to teach and making the experience a valuable one for the participants is the most important objective I have.

But I also shared my story for another reason – I think that it’s important to talk about our failures to help others benefit from our mistakes. (more…)

A little more than a week ago, managing director of the International Monetary Fund and the likely presidential candidate for the French presidency next year, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, was taken off a flight, handcuffed, and arrested by New York City police for allegedly sexually assaulting a housekeeper in his room at the Sofitel Hotel in Manhattan. Living with a Perfectionist and Trying to Get “It Right”

I work with an amazing and giving man, Mike, who is now in his late seventies. Mike teaches leadership in a number of programs with me and has been a mentor to me for nearly fifteen years. Mike is not only a great teacher, he also has an uncanny ability to connect with people. Whether we are in New York or Sydney he can strike up a conversation, find out interesting local information, crack jokes, light up people’s faces, and leave them, and all of us who are lucky enough to witness the interactions, feeling good. Every one of these encounters, even though I’m usually not involved, leaves me a little lighter and a little happier. He creates high quality connections and their positive energy radiates in every direction.

I, on the other hand, live with a perfectionist – me.  (more…)
