The Collapse of the Red Sox and My Choice to Live Differently: A Program to Change How You React to Negative Events

I was born in 1946.  I suspect I became a Red Sox fan in 1945.  I am sure it was sometime shortly after the day of conception.  What this means is that I have lived through every tragedy in the modern history of this unique franchise.   When Dent hit the homerun, when the ball rolled through Buckner’s legs, when Aaron Boone pulled one over the fence, I was devastated.  Each time it took months to recover.  Last night, when the Red Sox fell from ahead to lose and the Rays came from behind to win all in a three-minute period, it seemed to eclipse all of the previous disasters.  It was so improbable.

Even so, here is the big news.

I feel great.

I still love the Red Sox. But the negative events that often surround the team no longer determine how I feel. (more…)

Staying Positive While Failing Miserably

Monday I arrived in India in a state of Lift, believing that teaching here for the first time would offer me an opportunity to positively impact a class of Indian managers and personally experience a dramatic learning experience. Today, it’s Friday, and the program is over. As anticipated, I’ve had a rich learning experience.  Other than that, it’s been pretty much of a disaster. (more…)

Very Personal Positive Leadership

One June 18, 2010, I returned home after directing two positive leadership programs at the University of Michigan where I worked with faculty to help executives understand core concepts of Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS) and the practical tools to implement them back in their workplaces. Upon arriving home, I was excited about the work that we had done, and the steps that the participants would take to create vibrant, positive workplaces. Little did I know that my ability to actually live these principles would be put to the test at home in less than a week. (more…)
